Garland enjoyed bowling in several bowling leagues, fishing and barbecuing. He was employed at US Steel (which later became USS-Posco Industries), as a fork lift driver for thirty-five years, retiring in July of 2002. The family moved to Pittsburg when Garland was eight years old and he attended local schools and graduated from Antioch High School in 1955. He was born on Januin Durant, Oklahoma to General and Grace Powell.
